All That Glitters Is Gold (And Black)

Gold foil birthday card with black glitter polka dots! #cardmaking #stampinup #stampingville

A funny thing happened on the way to creating this gold and black glittery birthday card.

It's not the usual "look how my mistake turned out to be something cool". Oh no. It's more like "my mind is mush lately and I keep forgetting things and now that I've made this card I want to give proper credit and, oh hey look, this was actually a challenge and I'm still in time!"  Duh.

So anywhoooo ... Cath at Moxie Fab World featured a bunch of photos showing off the super hot design trend of using gold and then issued the All That Glitters is Gold Challenge. The photos are loaded with inspiration, but this one stopped me in my tracks:

Pointed toe flats in metallic gold with black polka-dots

Not only are those shoes adorable, but how clever is that photography? Gah! I saved the picture for later and went about my business. Fast forward two weeks, when I run across the photo and decide to sit right down and create.

I wanted to create a card that looked just like those shoes and the Stampin' Up! Gold Foil Sheets were the perfect solution for the backdrop. Then, in a moment of sheer stupidity genius, I decided the black spots should be glittered. (I have a love/hate relationship with glitter. Love the sparkle. Hate the mess. I've called in hazmat for the craft room.)

Close-up of gold embossed greeting and glitter spots

For the glittered spots, I applied black cardstock to a piece of the Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets, punched out the circles, peeled away the backing, pressed the sticky circles into a pile of Ultrafine Black Glitter, and presto - easily glittered spots! (Bad pun intended.)

With my finished card in hand, I went to find the proper photo source, and lo and behold, it's a challenge! Well, I'll be darned - I plum forgot.

The moral of the story for you is that inspiration can be found in many places: fashion, decor, and nature to name a few. The moral of the story for me is that I need to keep better track of fun challenges because I'm not usually this lucky!

p.s. You've still got time to play in this challenge - the deadline is Monday, October 7th.

p.p.s. I love how shiny that gold foil is, but man it's hard to photograph without getting weird reflections. Egads.

Happy Friday!

Truly Grateful

Truly Grateful Autumn Card #cardmaking #papercrafts #StampinUp #Stampingville

Happy Fall, Y'all.

Now that fall is officially here, it's time to really put those autumn colors (and papers) to use. Today's card mixes a fall theme with trendy gold embossing and stunning patterned paper from the Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper collection.

The gold embossing on Early Espresso Core'dinations cardstock is created using the background stamp from the Truly Grateful stamp set. I don't know about you, but to me the stamp looks like old planks of wood arranged in a chevron pattern. It's so interesting and has tons of possibilities - as soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it!

Truly Grateful card details

Tucked behind the embossed panel is the gorgeous paper, cut using the Adorning Accents Edgelits and embossed with the coordinating Adorning Accents Embossing Folder.

I love the look of the Burlap Ribbon and it was a no-brainer for this card. Obviously.

I've become somewhat of an expert now at fussy cutting the wheat. That happens when you continually stamp and cut pieces for projects that end up in the "fail" pile. I'm so over it. Hello, acorn!

We're Clearly Going Places!

Are you a fan of the trendy map craze? If so, let me introduce you to the newest set of photopolymer stamps from Stampin' Up!

Map It Out

Take your paper-crafting projects in a new direction with the Map It Out Photopolymer Stamp Set. Perfect for creating postcards, scrapbook pages, travel journals and more. Whether you're planning a move or documenting travel, this stamp set will help you do it.

Greetings From

The images in the Greetings From Photopolymer Stamp Set can be used on their own or along with the Map It Out set for double the fun. These cute travel and adventure related images are sized perfectly for easy cropping with your favorite punches or combine them to create a scene.

New to Photopolymer?

Stampin' Up! photopolymer stamps provide a completely clear option for your creative stamping. Just like the top-quality rubber stamps you've loved from Stampin' Up! over the years (25 years!), these clear stamps provide a perfectly stamped image every time.

A few other things to love:
  • They're entirely transparent for perfect placement every time!
  • They are durable. The photopolymer material is designed to last.
  • They're age tested. They won't yellow or cloud up over time.

Sending Love Sympathy Card

Elegant sympathy card with subtle colors #cardmaking #rubberstamping #StampinUp #stampingville

It's been ages since I played along at Mojo Monday, so I thought I'd pop in and give Julee's great sketch a go for my sympathy card. Unfortunately, this card will be going straight out the door to comfort a friend.

The Stampin' Up! Love & Sympathy stamp set includes a beautiful and comforting sentiment (see below), something I consider carefully when purchasing sympathy sets. Used on its own, this set provides simple elegance (as demonstrated here), or combine it with similar stamp styles for additional looks as I've done today.

The Flower Garden Embossing Folder is a near match to the stamped flower image. I gave it just a subtle hint of color using a Sponge Dauber and Crisp Cantaloupe ink after embossing it in the Big Shot.

For subtle sophistication, the Baked Brown Sugar panel is stamped in Gold Metallic ink using the gorgeous script stamp from the Background Builders stamp set. Although the stamp itself is nearly 6 inches long to accommodate landscape-oriented cards, it was very easy to simply repeat the stamping down the length of my panel. So easy, in fact, I just eyeballed it, but you can also use the trusty Stamp-a-ma-jig for perfect placement.

Love & Sympathy focal image with embossed butterfly

I thought it might be fun to use one of the Apothecary Accents Framelits Dies to create the rectangular shape behind my focal image to resemble a tag, and simply snipped off one end. The opposite end has a small opening for my ribbon to thread through.

Speaking of ribbon, I used the adorable Ruffle Stretch Trim in Crisp Cantaloupe in place of the scallop border in the sketch, and colored Whisper White Taffeta Ribbon using a Pistachio Pudding marker to create custom coordinating ribbon.

Gold embossed butterfly + Bitty Butterfly punch

In place of the circle, I've used a delicate butterfly. The image, from the Papillon Potpourri set, was stamped in Gold Metallic ink on Pistachio Pudding cardstock, heat embossed using gold embossing powder, and cropped using the Bitty Butterfly punch.

Love Butterflies? There's still time to save 15% when you purchase Papillon Potpourri and the coordinating Bitty Butterfly punch together (Wood-Mount Bundle) or (Clear-Mount Bundle). This special bundle offer ends September 30. See additional Stampin' Up! bundles available year-round.
