Back To School Tax Free Weekend

Tax Free Holiday Stampin' Up! Craft Supplies Photo

It's back to school time for many and that means shopping! Many states have a tax-free holiday weekend (or week) on certain items like clothes, shoes, and school supplies.

If your state has a tax-free holiday for school supplies, you might be able to stock up on some of your favorite craft supplies during the tax-free weekend.

In Florida, the state sales tax holiday is August 2-4, 2013 and school supplies (up to $15 per item) are included in the tax-free weekend. If you are a Florida resident, the following Stampin' Up! products will be tax-free during the holiday period:

Things to remember:

  • You must place your order during the tax holiday period in order to receive these items tax-free.
  • This is a state sales tax holiday and may not apply to additional city, jurisdiction, or county taxes.
  • You may place your order in my online store (even if you don't live in Florida) and Stampin' Up! will figure the state sales tax accordingly.
  • Your state may have higher per item limits for school supplies, allowing you greater savings. See chart for information and links.

Happy (tax-free) shopping!

Easy Gift Boxes + Make Your Own Paper Feathers

You're the Best Gift Box with paper feathers

Need a cute gift box or party favor in a flash? The new Stampin' Up! Tag a Bag Gift Boxes and Bags help you to create pretty packaging for gifts or treats in no time.

One of our fun make & take convention projects was a Tag a Bag Gift Box with a few simple-to-create embellishments. The actual boxes come in a package of 8 kraft gift boxes with acetate sleeves.

Fill the box with a gift or treats, then add a tag and ribbon or twine. For super simple decorating, use the Tag a Bag Accessory Kit full of die-cut tags, Baker's Twine, mini clothespins, and more.

Tag a Bag Gift Box: Decorated and ready to give

For our project, we created and stamped a topper to place over the box before sliding into the acetate sleeve.  Images from the Hello, Lovely and Gorgeous Grunge stamp sets were stamped on Bermuda Bay cardstock.

The box was tied with Summer Starfruit Stitched Satin Ribbon with a stamped "You're the Best" tag tied to it with Linen Thread.

Handmade Paper Feathers and Tag

For a final trendy touch, we created paper feathers - so quick and easy!

How to make your own paper feathers:

Punch a circle from cardstock or patterned paper. The larger the circle punch is, the larger your feather will be. (We used 2-1/2" and 1-3/4" Circle Punches.)

Create a feather shape using a circle punch

Insert the circle back into the punch about one-third of the way and punch.

Punched feather or leaf shape

You now have a feather shape! (You can also create a leaf using this same technique.) Fold the feather shape in half.

Snip at an angle to create feather

Snip through both layers at an angle, making the snips very close to one another.

For a feather, make snips at an angle and close together

Finished paper feather. Rough up the edges for dimension.

Unfold the feather and rough up the edges to add dimension. Adhere feathers to your card or project using Glue Dots.

Easy gift box with ribbon and paper feathers

The Tag a Bag Gift Boxes are perfect for a variety of small gifts or treats and they are food safe, so you only have to line them if you want to. See more ideas on pages 158-159 of the Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog.

Have a great week!

xoxo

Stampin' Up! All Occasion Cards

During the Stampin' Up! Convention last week, our small group held a stamping event much like a shoebox swap. Everyone designed a card project and created individual kits for the participants to assemble. By creating the kits, we didn't have to lug our stamps, ink, and tools on the plane. It worked out great.

Hopefully, you've already seen the card I designed (if not, see the card here and the tutorial here); today I wanted to share with you the cute cards the other girls designed.

Cute cards, right?  We have so much fun getting together to create and share ideas.

Want to join us? Get in on the fun and creativity by joining Stampin' Up! and receive a free project kit from the upcoming Holiday Catalog along with your Starter Kit. The whole she-bang ships for free, plus I'd love to share some of the project kit ideas we saw at Convention. Learn more about the free project kits here.

How To: Create a Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom

Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom Tutorial

Yesterday I shared my Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom card and today I'll show you how to create the flower blossom, with a few tips along the way.

The first tip? Throw the rules out the window! Well, only partially. Typically when working with stamped images and framelit dies, you should always stamp first and then die-cut the image using the framelits. For this project, you'll need to die-cut the shapes first and then stamp.

To create the bottom piece, die-cut one flower using the second-to-largest framelit from the Floral Frames Collection Framelits Dies. I used Primrose Petals cardstock. (Please ignore the weird color in these photos. It was after dark-thirty or pouring rain or both and I didn't use proper lighting.)

Using the Mosaic Madness stamp set, stamp the mosaic image around the flower, lining up the tip of the stamp with the tip of the die-cut flower. (I used Primrose Petals ink.)

For the middle layer of "petals", stamp the striped mosaic image eight times onto a piece of cardstock. (I used Blushing Bride ink on Blushing Bride cardstock.) Crop the images using the Mosaic Punch.

Gently roll each "petal" around a pen or pencil to curl it. I used a White Gel Pen and the curl turned out perfect. You could also use a bone folder.

Adhere the "petals" to the die-cut flower layer, centering the "petals" between the stamped images below and aligning the outer tip of the "petal" just touching the edge of the lower flower layer.

TIP: Only apply glue to the inner tip of the "petal", so the outer tip will curl upwards.

Additional tip: If you accidentally squeeze out too much glue on the petals (like I did), don't panic. This area will be covered up and no one will see it. And remember to order more glue!

To create the top layer, die-cut one flower using the second smallest framelit from the Floral Frames Collection Framelits Dies.

Stamp the quatrefoil image around the flower, lining up the edge of the stamp with the edge of the die-cut flower. Slightly bend the edges of the flower upward. Adhere the flower to the center of the blossom layers using a Stampin' Dimensional.

Add an embellishment to the center as desired. For this flower blossom, I used a Vintage Faceted Designer Button tied with Whisper White Baker's Twine.

Stampin' Up! Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom Tutorial

This beautiful Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom can now be used on a variety of projects: a card, bag, tag, or box. Create it using your favorite colors or pull colors from your favorite Designer Series Paper if you are using that. The possibilities are endless, but the result will always be stunning!

Enjoy!

xoxo

Stampin' Up! Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom Card

Stampin' Up! Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom Card

Have you seen the new Mosaic Madness stamp set from Stampin' Up!? It's a versatile (and large) set with 11 quatrefoil design images to mix and match to your hearts content. The fun doesn't stop there! The stamp set has a coordinating Mosaic Punch and Modern Mosaic Embossing Folder.

After seeing a few punched images turned into flowers, I set out to create my own version and this is the result - a gorgeous Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom! I used this card for a group project at convention and I think it was a hit.

Mosaic Madness Flower Blossom

I paired the punched images with two die-cut layers using the Floral Frames Collection Framelits. Each layer is stamped with an image from the Mosaic Madness stamp set.

After I created the first one, I couldn't wait to try it with more color combinations. (Read: I couldn't stop making these blossoms!)

On this one, I used an image from the Lacy & Lovely stamp set for the top flower layer.
