Love You Love Notes

As Valentine's Day approaches, I always remember back to grade school and preparing to exchange Valentine's with the other kids in my class. Did you do this?  Mom would take me to the store to pick out the package of assorted Valentine's. Once home, I'd examine them all and pick out my very favorite ones.  THOSE would go to my bff's in the class and a few select boys who I thought were "worthy" of the special ones. Then I'd get busy signing them, addressing the envelope and crossing the names off my list.

I know that some years we decorated shoeboxes for the Valentine's to be placed in, but I don't remember that always happening. My, how the memory fades over time!

Do you have fond childhood memories of Valentine's Day?  I'd love to hear about them. Leave me a comment below with your favorite Valentine memory or story.

Love you . . .

If you need a few "love note" sized Valentine's this year, here are a couple of quick cuties. The Valentine Defined stamp set provides several perfectly sized images for 3x3 love notes - the perfect size for hiding and surprising your loved ones.

And isn't that red Glimmer Paper awesome? Super sparkly and no glitter mess to contend with. Ya-hoo!! It's super easy to use too - punches work beautifully with this paper and, of course, you can use it with your dies in the Big Shot. I'm sure you'll be seeing more of this on future projects. After all, red glitter isn't just for Valentine's Day!

Happy Monday and thanks for visiting today.

xoxo

Love Impressions Valentine Card

Isn't this Valentine darling? I've had the Love Impressions Rub-Ons sitting on my table for some time now, just waiting for me to use them. I received a sheet of them from Stampin' Up! as a little surprise gift, tucked into one of my recent demonstrator orders. They even sent a little notecard (created with My Digital Studio no less) that said:

"Happy Valentine's Day! From all of us at Stampin' Up!"

I thought it was very cool and a terrific (unexpected) perk of being a demonstrator.  Does YOUR company give YOU little gifts? Mine never did.

On with the show ...

Yesterday, I mentioned that I created two very different cards using the same Mojo Monday sketch. This one still stays fairly close to the sketch - just a slight variation. (See the other card here.)  Remember, when you play along with sketch challenges, you are allowed to take some creative liberties!

This was a very simple card to create! My heart background is from the Playdate Designer Series Paper pack and perfect for Valentine's. The only "stamping" on this card was done using the I {Love} Love jumbo wheel with Real Red on Whisper White card stock.

The Bashful Blue scallop circle was cut with the Big Shot and the Scallop Circles #2 die. I added the clouds and the oval "love you" sentiment using the rub-ons. The hot air balloon, also a rub-on, was placed on Whisper White card stock, hand cut, and attached with dimensionals for pop.

Thanks for "flying by" today!

xoxo

Key To My Heart

There is a great sketch this week over at Mojo Monday, and I've used it for two very different Valentine Cards. For today's card, I didn't stray from the original design and I love the result.  In place of the hat pin, I've used the new Trinket Keys from Stampin' Up! I knew when I saw them in the mini catalog next to the You're A Gem stamp set, that I'd be seeing both items on my craft table in short order! Hee!

I just remembered the category for SUO Challenges this time is Valentine Projects. Guess who's going to be pulling double duty?!

For the sentiment, I gave it a background (from Artistic Etchings) by using the rock and roll method to ink my stamp on the outer edges only. This allowed the sentiment a little room to shine. After punching it out, I distressed it a bit; then sponged on Soft Suede ink.

The panel underneath the scallop was created using images from Artistic Etchings again, but this time I used Soft Suede ink and the Tea Stain dye ink from the Distressing Essentials Kit. After a run through the Big Shot in the Square Lattice embossing folder, I distressed it around the edges and sponged with Soft Suede.

The key seemed a little too silver and bright, so I sponged Soft Suede on it too - although it will probably rub off if touched. And of course, I HAD to use the Vintage Wallpaper embossing folder for my background piece. I love that thing!

Tomorrow, I'll share with you the OTHER card I created using this same sketch. It's a COMPLETELY different (and fun) card.

Thanks for visiting!

Simple Cardmaking - Valentine Card

If you are a busy paper crafter or if you prefer clean and simple card designs, today's card may be right up your alley.

And here's a surprise: No Stamping!

What??

I KNOW.

This card uses the new Love Impressions rub-ons (featured in the 2011 Occasions Mini Catalog) in place of a stamped sentiment. Of course, you can always stamp your little heart out on the inside of the card.  (Pun intended) Hee!

Even though this is a simple card, it was still fun to create. I saw several versions of this heart out in blog land and started with that basic idea. Punch a heart (full heart punch) from Real Red card stock. Punch out lots (and lots) of the flower shape from the Itty Bitty Shapes punch pack. Gently bend the flower petals and glue each flower to the full heart. I started at the bottom point and continued around the edges, filling in the center last. The white heart "mat" I attached it to was created with the Big Shot and the Scalloped Heart of Hearts Embosslit.

The tiny scallop border peeking out from under the Basic Gray card stock, was created with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border punch.

Sweet. Clean. And simple.

Those rub-ons are too stinkin' cute. I love the little hot air balloons - I'm working on a card using those right now. Can't wait to show you!

Got Valentines? Only 18 days until Valentine's Day ...

xoxo

A Fun, Masculine Birthday Card

Do you have trouble coming up with "masculine" card ideas? Do you find yourself over-thinking the whole process and then getting stuck? It happens a lot. I used to have the same problem, until I learned a few tips along the way:
  • If the card is for a fun occassion, such as a birthday, then it's okay for the card to be fun! It doesn't have to be a card with an image of a tree off in the distance. Save those for more somber occasions.
  • Use some hardware. Simple brads and eyelets (small or jumbo size) work incredibly well, as does Hodgepodge Hardware.
  • Instead of ribbon, use Hemp Twine or Twill Tape. Customize twill tape by stamping or applying rub-ons directly to the twill, or dye the twill using re-inkers.
  • Rough it up. Use techniques such as tearing, sanding and distressing.
  • Use punches or dies to create basic shapes: circles, ovals, squares, arrows, stars, even leaves.
  • Give it some texture. Embossing powders, embossing folders and texture plates will give your projects interesting patterns and detail. These can be as subtle or as prominent as you like.

Today's "manly" birthday card was created for a teen nephew. I kept it fairly simple, but added enough texture and detail to make it interesting, fun and special. A few basic punches and the new Punch Bunch stamp set (one of the free sale-a-bration products) gave me a great starting point for this card. Then I simply added a bit of texture in the background and a small strip of patterned paper anchored down with metallic brads.

As an added bonus, now that the design work is done, this card can be created very easily and fairly quickly too. This makes it ideal for making several at once to have on hand.

Do you have a favorite tip you have learned that helps you to create "masculine" cards? Please share it here in the comments. Crafty tips are such a good thing to share!

Because I Care

With Sale-a-bration starting TOMORROW (woo hoo!), today is the perfect time to highlight one of the exclusive Hostess Stamp Sets available from Stampin' Up! This Level 1 Hostess set, Because I Care, is available as a free product choice for qualifying workshops or individual orders. Contact me today to schedule your workshop or place your order.

Presto . . .

Today's card uses a totally fun product: Presto Patterns Specialty Designer Series Paper. This heavy-weight paper appears white with clear glossy designs that you "magically" reveal with ink or paint for an emboss resist look.

After cutting the paper to size, I inked a brayer with Old Olive ink and ran it over the piece to reveal the design. This was layered onto a Concord Crush mat before adding it to my Whisper White card base.

I created a "frame" for my focal image by paper piercing a design (using the template in the Mat Pack) in opposite corners of a Whisper White piece with another Concord Crush mat. For the main image, I inked most of the flowers using a Concord Crush ink pad, then filled in the rest using a marker. The stem and leaves were colored with a marker as well.

TIP: Use markers to color directly on the stamp when you want more than one color within an image. Once you are ready to stamp, huff (breathe) on the stamp to re-moisten the inks, then stamp onto paper.

I hand cut the image and attached it using Stampin' Dimensionals to really pop it from the frame. The frame was then mounted to the card, also with Dimensionals. The sentiment, stamped in Concord Crush, was cropped using the large oval and placed on a Concord Crush scallop oval (attached with ... more Dimensionals!)

This makes a wonderful "thinking of you" card, as well as a sympathy card. By changing the sentiment (included in the set) you have a stunning thank you card as well.

Thanks for stopping by today!

Flamingo Love For Valentine's Day

Love is in the air around Stampingville these days! And it was love at first sight when I spotted the Valentine Defined stamp set in the new Occasions Mini Catalog. Obviously, you'll be able to create adorable Valentine cards using this set, but several other uses sprang to mind immediately.

With the exception of the actual valentine "definition", all of the other images in this set will carry over beautifully for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and "just because" I love yous.  In addition, I'm visualizing several of the images on cute scrapbook pages as well as tags, boxes, and 3-D items. With all that versatility, I think we've discovered "must have" defined! ;-)

Today's card was one of our club projects this month and it was a big hit! We got things "rolling" by creating a custom background on Whisper White card stock using the I {Love} Love jumbo wheel inked with Pretty In Pink. (See the full wheel image here.)

TIP: Stampin' Around wheels can be inked by rolling the stamp across a full size ink pad or by inserting an ink cartridge into the Stampin' Around handle.

The string of hearts image at the top of the card was inked with Pretty In Pink first, then using a marker directly on the stamp, a few random hearts were colored with Melon Mambo ink. Next, we added texture to a strip of Basic Gray card stock with a zip through the Big Shot in the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder. This was layered onto our custom piece and tied with Pretty In Pink satin ribbon.

The valentine "definition" was stamped on Whisper White with Basic Gray ink (stamped twice, one above the other) followed by the flamingo image inked with Melon Mambo. This was cropped with a circle punch and mounted to a large Pretty In Pink scallop circle.

Click on any photo for a larger view

Finally, we stamped the {Love} image in Melon Mambo and cropped it with the small oval punch and tied it dangling from our ribbon using Linen Thread. This entire piece was layered on a Basic Gray mat, which was set on a Melon Mambo card base.

Are you feelin' the love? Speaking of love, I {LOVE} your comments! Leave me a comment below and tell me your favorite Stampin' Up! love themed stamp set.

Easy Card-Making Using Craft Punches

Did you know you can create faces and characters using your paper craft punches? You can - from super simple to very complex - the possibilities are endless depending on your imagination, your collection of punches, and your determination! You can also vary the size of the creation by using smaller or larger punches and even dies and a die-cutting machine. Most paper crafters refer to this technique as "punch art".

Isn't this "Elmo" card CUTE?! This is a simple birthday card I made for one of my cutie-patootie nieces who will turn TWO on Saturday. Two of my nieces are just babies, about six months apart, and they both are loving "Elmo" right now. I hope this card will make her smile!

The kids love getting these punch art cards, because it feels "customized" just for them. Kids also enjoy MAKING these as well. Need a fun "snow day" activity? Grab your left over scraps of paper and a few punches and let them go to town.

To make "Elmo" this large, I used my Big Shot with the Scallop Circles #2 die and the Circles #2 die (using the largest circles on each die). For the mouth, just crop off about a third of the circle. The eyes and nose are regular circle punches.

Oh! And the little heart in the dialogue bubble? That image is from the Valentine Defined stamp set in the new Occasions Mini Catalog. (See the stamp set here.) While this set is geared towards Valentine's Day, don't write it off as a one hit wonder. This is a versatile stamp set and several of the images can be used year round. Wouldn't those flamingos look cute on a zoo themed scrapbook page? The tree with heart shaped leaves? Super cute for a family tree page. Hearts, love, and more hearts? I'm thinking of weddings, anniversaries, and "just because I love you" cards, pages and more.

Tomorrow, I'll be featuring a Valentine's Day card using the Valentine Defined stamp set. Be sure to come back and check it out. It's a cutie!

The All-Purpose Valentine

While some men and many women appreciate a pretty Valentine with all the frills, there ARE those who just might prefer something a little more ... subdued. If you have one of THOSE people on your list, you don't have to sacrifice beauty - just tone it down a notch. (And lose the frilly pink ribbon just this once, okay?)

Today's clean and simple card has lots of interesting texture and the Rich Razzleberry steps up for duty in place of the traditional pink or red. Oh, and did I mention you can create this card in just 5-10 minutes? Perfect for the busy stamper!

I started with a standard size (5-1/2" x 4-1/4") card base of Rich Razzleberry. Using the heart image, from the Level 1 Hostess set Punch Potpourri, I inked it up with VersaMark and stamped it around the outside edges of my card front creating a subtle background.

Next I chose a piece of textured Whisper White card stock to stamp the image from Elizabeth using Rich Razzleberry ink. I added a thin strip of Rich Razzleberry card stock across the bottom and then stamped the AMOUR image from Artistic Etchings just above the strip. After rounding the top corners only, I attached this directly to my card front.

For the first heart, I used the Scalloped Heart of Hearts embosslit, which embosses AND cuts the card stock all with one pass through the Big Shot. I placed it right over the Elizabeth image, covering the center oval.

For the second heart, I inked the heart image with Rich Razzleberry and stamped it on smooth Whisper White card stock. I cropped it using the Full Heart punch. Next, I grabbed a sponge dauber and sponged Rich Razzleberry ink lightly around the edge of the heart, just to create a tiny bit of contrast. Without re-inking the dauber, I sponged over the flowers within the heart to help them "pop" just a bit. I gave this heart a boost by attaching it with Stampin' Dimensionals.

Aaaand, we're done! Clean and simple and those non-fussy types will love it!

Seriously, this card will take you all of ten minutes (or less). The base is Confetti White cut to 3" x 6", scored at 3" and folded in half. Cut a square of Pretty In Pink (2-3/4" x 2-3/4"). Using the template in the mat pack and the paper piercing tool, pierce opposite corners with a few holes and mount to the Confetti White using Stampin' Dimensionals. Punch the mini petal card using Melon Mambo card stock and the Petal Card XL Double Punch.

hello

Stamp "hello" from the Tiny Tags stamp set using Whisper White craft ink in the upper portion of the petal card center. Using the leaf image from the Every Little Bit stamp set, stamp onto Old Olive card stock with Old Olive ink. Hand cut the leaf and adhere directly to the petal card center. Using the small flower image from Every Little Bit, stamp onto Pretty In Pink card stock using Melon Mambo ink. Hand cut the flower and attach a rhinestone to the center of the flower, then attach it to the petal card using a Dimensional. Attach the petal card to the card base.
DONE! Told you so.

#119273-Petal Card XL Double Punch

Double Punch?

The new double punches from Stampin' Up! actually perform two actions with one punch. The Petal Card Extra-Large Double Punch creates score lines with the first action and then makes the actual cut with a second action. The two actions are accomplished seamlessly and easily with just one press of the punch.
