Happy Halloween!

It's Halloween! It's Halloween!
The moon is full and bright
And we shall see what can't be seen
On any other night.

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,
Grinning goblins fighting duels
Werewolves rising from their tombs,
Witches on their magic brooms.

In masks and gown we haunt the street
And knock on doors for trick or treat
Tonight we are the king and queen,
For oh tonight it's Halloween!
 -Jack Prelutsky

Wishing you a frightfully fun Halloween!

Happy Birthday Digital Card and Birthday Giveaways!

I did a little creating this morning with My Digital Studio, the digital paper-crafting software from Stampin' Up! And since I have "birthday" on the brain today, I decided to create a birthday card. Did I mention today is MY birthday?! Yep, that's me ... another year wiser (?) and more creative.

This card was made using the original software elements (no new downloads) plus the free update for in-colors and the new Stampin' Up! core colors.  Instead of choosing one of the various templates, I started with a blank templete to create my own design. The color combination is Concord Crush, Kraft, Mellow Moss, and Very Vanilla.

Don't forget: The My Digital Studio Design Contest is underway. Enter by Nov. 15, 2010 for a chance to win free digital downloads from Stampin' Up! valued at approx. $400! Click here for details.

BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAYS!

To celebrate my birthday today, I have two special giveaways for you:

Giveaway #1 - Free Tutorial - Scallop Square Note Card Holder with Note Cards. This is a step-by-step tutorial with photos. This project is quick and fun and makes a darling gift or keep it for yourself (I won't tell). Leave a comment telling me your best birthday memory. One lucky reader will be chosen at random to win the free tutorial. (Leave your comment today before 11:59 PM EDT.)

Giveaway #2 - Free Stamp Set - Exclusive Level One Hostess Stamp Set Because I Care.  Place an order TODAY of $50 or more (before S/H & Tax) in my online store and you will be entered into a drawing for this stamp set. Order must be placed TODAY by 11:50 PM (MDT).

Winners will be announced on Monday.

A Cute Felt Basket With The Big Shot

I missed the last challenge over at SUO Challenges, so I wanted to be sure to play along this time. The challenge is to make something with fabric or waffle paper.  I have a fabric project in the works, but it isn't ready for prime time yet, so I had to improvise. Then I remembered some left over felt I had from another project and I knew just what to make! I had this idea ages ago, but for some reason I hadn't gotten around to it yet.

Isn't this little felt basket cute? And the best part: NO SEWING! Yep, I warmed up my glue gun while I cut out all the felt pieces with my Big Shot and then went to town. So easy!

STAR POWER:
  • All the felt pieces were cut at the same time with the exclusive Baskets & Blooms die from Stampin' Up!
  • The die includes several flower layers to mix and match as you please. So fun.
  • The center of the flower is actually one of those darling Designer Buttons with a Basic Rhinestone Jewel in the center for a little bling.
  • Recognize the lace? It's our Raven Lace Trim from the 2010 Holiday Mini Catalog. It looks gorgeous layered over satin ribbon.

Did you know you can cut fabric and other materials with the Big Shot? Yes, it's true. Fabric, paper, vinyl, chipboard, magnet sheets, cork, and even aluminum cans! And that's not all - there is a long list of materials you can cut with the Big Shot and the right dies.

Let me know if there is a material or project that you would like to see here. Leave me a comment and tell me what you're curious to learn how to make with the Big Shot.

Halloween Crafts – Toilet Paper Roll Treat Holder

Isn’t this treat holder adorable? It's super cute in person; the photos really don't do it justice! I’d seen several versions floating around and I just had to create one myself. I thought it turned out so cute, I incorporated it into my Halloween class last month. Oh, and I’m in good company … even Shelli Gardner (co-founder and CEO of Stampin’ Up!) made a whole bunch of these. You can check out her version HERE.

I know you’ll want details, so I’ll give you a few basic instructions and the list of supplies I used. (Click on the pictures to enlarge). First, you’ll need an empty toilet paper roll. If you prefer, you could use an empty paper towel roll and cut it down to size. Either way, be sure to measure yours before you cut any Designer Series Paper. Mine measured about 4-1/4” high, so my DSP measured 6” x 4-1/4”.

All the scallop circles were punched with our new XL 2-3/8” Scallop Circle punch. The top and bottom scallops are actually two glued together (one Basic Black and one Tangerine Tango).

I glued the white scallop (with the stamped image) to the tube before any further assembly. I used Tombow glue to attach the tube to the bottom scallops, then applied more glue around the base and added Chunky Glitter. Be sure to let this dry for a while.

For the top scallops, on the top side I added a textured circle with the little pumpkin popped up. Underneath, I glued a stack of four circles together and glued a textured one on top. This helps the “lid” to stay on a bit better. I used my (retired) slot punch on either side of the scallop to make slots for the ribbon. You could substitute a small hole punch.

On the inside of the tube, I attached Sticky Strip around the top and adhered ONE END of the ribbon. Then I slid the lid onto the ribbon, and THEN attached the other end of the ribbon to the opposite side. I covered this with a small strip of Designer Series Paper with one edge scalloped.

After you finish decorating the outside, you can fill your treat holder with candy or a small gift. Mine had candy, but it seems to have disappeared! Now how did that happen?

How do you like it? Do you have a question or comment? Please let me know! I love comments from my Stampingville friends!!

Witch Way Is The Candy?

This adorable little witch and her stinkin' cute kitty jumped out at me from the Holiday Mini Catalog as soon as I saw them. Even the tiny bat is cute! A little birdie told me this Halloween stamp set (Fang-tastic) won't be carried over to next year, and I'm so bummed. I really think the whole set is just adorable.

STAR POWER:

  • While the fab black striped grosgrain ribbon works for lots of projects, it's pretty much a natural for all your spooky Halloween projects.
  • The Raven Lace Trim works perfectly surrounding our little witch and it's a dream to work with.
  • The new Decorative Label punch is brilliant! Great for making tags, yes. But this punch is so versatile and has such a great shape and size, you'll be reaching for it time and time again.
I love this stamp set for sheer cuteness and versatility. With ten images to choose from, you can literally mix and match to your heart's content and create numerous "scenes". My personal favorite images (in addition to the girl and her adorable little cat) are the broom and of course our Count Dracula. He looks like a little Eddie Munster, doesn't he? Please tell me you remember The Munsters!

If you like this, be sure to come back tomorrow. I'll be showing off a super cute treat holder adorned with our favorite little witch!

Reverse Masking For A Cool Moon

Today's card uses the House of Haunts stamp set again, but this time it's the spooky looking tree looming in the moonlight. Do you suppose that part of the appeal of this set is all the cool techniques you get to do with it? It sure is fun to try them out.

STAR POWER:
  • I'm not a big fan of dragging card stock through an ink pad, unless it's for a very special effect. But this is one of those times! The black "smudges" add to the eerie feel.
  • The black scallop trim border evokes thoughts of a wrought iron gate ... perhaps leading to the cemetery. Eek!
  • The black embossing gives this card some extra shine and pizzazz. Plus, it's fun to do.

How'd you do that?  Achieve a perfect moon (or sun!) by creating a reverse mask. Punch a circle from a section of scratch paper. Place the scratch paper over your card stock exactly where you want your moon. While holding the scratch paper firmly in place, use a sponge dauber to apply ink to the exposed card stock. Once you have completely sponged ink within the circle, carefully lift the scrap paper and discard it. You should now have a "moon" on your card stock waiting for the next image to be stamped over it. Ta-da!

If you have a question about this technique, just ask me in the comments below.

Trick or Treat Mini Milk Carton

Got Treats? Surprise your ghosts and goblins this year with this darling treat holder.  You'll be able to crank out lots of these in no time, thanks to the Big Shot and the exclusive Mini Milk Carton die from Stampin' Up! Add a few quick embellishments, fill 'er up with treats and you'll be good to go.

STAR POWER:

  • The black panels get the scary treatment with the Spider Web embossing folder. While this is super easy to do, you could just skip the panels and emboss the carton itself before assembly.
  • To the bat cave, Robin! Yep, it's a go-to tool for Halloween: the Bitty Bat punch. Instant spooky embellishment.
  • The Jewelry Tag punch isn't just for jewelry. Attach these tiny tags anywhere you want a cute sentiment including cards, scrapbook pages, treats, gifts and more.
Tip: Because the Mini Milk Carton die cuts and scores at the same time, you'll only want to put one layer of card stock or paper through at a time. While it isn't critical, you will get better results if you use the premium crease pad. Don't forget the Sticky Strip ... this is no time for wimpy adhesive!

It's Getting Spooky Around Here

It's beginning to look a lot like ... Halloween! Bwahahahaha. Todays card was totally inspired by a card in the 2010-2011 Idea Book & Catalog (page 24). I did change it up just a bit, but not much. It's a great design and a fun card to make. The moon and subsequent "moonglow" is created using Stampin' Pastels. I chose So Saffron, which worked perfectly.

STAR POWER:
  • This stamp set pretty much begs to be embossed. Hey, why not? Embossing is loads of fun. For a clean, sharp embossed image, be sure to give the card stock a swipe with the Embossing Buddy before stamping your image.
  • The Designer Label and Modern Label punches make a super duo.
  • A bat punch? Who the heck can resist that for halloween?!

This card is super easy to re-create and all the little "goblins" in your life will love receiving it. If you have a question about this card, just leave me a comment. I'll respond ASAP.

If you like Halloween, stay tuned for more ghoulish fun this week.  I've got a few treats in store just for you!

Thank You Beary Much

This sweet little guy was created for a special customer who happens to love bears. When she recently purchased the Teddy & Train stamp set, I wanted to thank her in a "beary" special way.

STAR POWER:
  • For sheer cuteness, you can't go wrong with the stamp set Every Little Bit. This set, with 28 stamps, has something for nearly every occasion.
  • I borrowed the sentiment from my stash of Build-A-Bear Workshop stamps, Beary Nice Wishes.
  • I love to make 3x3 "love" notes. They are the perfect size for including with gifts or tucking into an order delivery.

The Stampin' Up! Clearance Rack Blitz continues!  Save up to 80% on hundreds of items through October 18. Better hurry though - quantities are limited and when they're gone ... they're gone! Clearance Rack items MUST be ordered online, but you can order regular items right along with them. And it's all delivered right to your doorstep. Now THAT'S an easy button!

Big Shot Letterpress Plates by Stampin' Up!

I have received a few questions regarding the new Letterpress Plates shown on page 42 of the 2010 Holiday Mini Catalog.  Letterpress Plates actually create a debossed impression, rather than the typical raised (or embossed) impression created with the Textured Impressions Embossing Folders. The extra fun comes in by inking the plate with craft ink before creating your layers (or "sandwich") for the zip through the Big Shot.

For all you visual learners out there, I've got a video for you ... grab your popcorn and get comfy.

Happy Thoughts 4U

Did you know it's Emotional Wellness Month? It is by golly, and if you ask me there are two surefire ways to give your attitude a kick in the pants. The first one is easy!

Kick start #1:  Head to your craft area and make something. Anything. Just get those creative juices going and go to town. In a creative slump? Find something to copy and make THAT. There are literally hundreds of ideas to copy in the Stampin' Up! 2010-2011 Idea Book & Catalog. Seriously.

Kick start #2: Think happy thoughts. I know it sounds corny.  I KNOW.  Problem is ... it also works!  Try being all mopey and down in the dumps when you're feeling happy, content, and gratified.

So how do you think happy thoughts and feel content and gratified?  See Kick start #1. It's cheaper than therapy. Well, maybe. Some of us need a LOT of "therapy". Wink, Wink.

STAR POWER:

  • The Apple Blossoms Level 2 Hostess Set is super versatile. I've made several completely different cards using it and I've got another one or two up my sleeve.
  • The darling Dotted Scallop Ribbon border punch adds cute detail to the scallop theme.
  • I adore the small flower button from the Designer Button collections. Notice that the "thread" is actually a thin strip of card stock "tied" through the button holes.
  • VersaMark isn't just for embossing. Use it just like any other ink pad to create a tone on tone effect.

Here's a major attitude adjuster: Stampin' Up! just added about 200 items to the Clearance Rack at savings of up to 80%. That isn't a misprint! Save up to 80% on tons of retired stuff like ribbon, buttons, brads, chipboard, card stock, albums, ink pads, punches and more. Here's the catch: It's available only while supplies last, online orders only, and all sales are final.  Tip: I noticed it appears there are 10 "pages" of products (depending on your page settings), but there are easily another 10 "pages" beyond that. Just keep clicking the little page arrow next to the page numbers to continue. You don't want to miss all that crafty goodness do you? Click here to browse the Clearance Rack.
